JHB Briefing

So I attended the Freedom Challenge briefing at Cycle Lab JHB.

For starters, it was fantasties. I had the opportunity to meet great names in the endurance racing world like Alex Harrison (racing snake), Ben Delange and the famous "Jack Black". we had such a lough.

I also had the opportunity to meet the one most important person during my ride............she was introduced as our Mom and Dad during the challenge..............the legendary Meryl Glaser. She is as one would describe in afrikaans... "n mense mens" "sout van die aarde"

So! what did I learn from this workshop besides the fact that I am far behind and dis-organised.

  • All participants are people just like me, crazy and insane with a taste for adventure.
  • It,s not all just about racing, but also enjoying the time out there, like Jack Black mention......have some fun while your out there.
  • The word "fok" has got many meanings during this challenge.
  • Be the person your mother thinks you are.....respect the support stations and be kind to the people running them.
  • Layering with different garments is far more effective than layering with one thick jacked.
  • For my strategy of 23 days I will spend about 6-9 ours of riding in the dark per day.
  • Velcro straps is very helpful.
  • Do not attempt to do the Baviaans kloof at night as a novice.
  • Navigate twice and ride once.......navigation is the most crucial part of the challenge.
  • Get enough exercise on walking with your bike.
  • Divide your kit into two....one part on your back and the other on your bike. It puts less stress on your back.
  • Do not try to pack everything....you will never have everything, pack what you'v got and go. do not over pack your bag. Weigh your bag after you'v packed it. (not more than 10 kg)
  • Put some many in your boxes, not bigger than 20's, change is scares.
  • Do not pack to much of the same energy sachets and sweets, you get gatfol for the taste, very a bit between flavours.

And that is pretty much it.
So my next step will be to start packing my ice cream boxes and send them off, hopefully to reach each and every one of them myself. LOL.

"I believe we were born to love ourselves instinctively.  But for some of us, somewhere between our innocence and becoming consciously aware, our minds, instead of being imprinted with self acceptance, became infected with the virus, I’m not good enough.
This virus can be removed with focused intention and specific action steps.  You’ll have the confidence to lift yourself to new heights and accept that you've always been good enough."
